Who Is USM?
The University of St. Martin (USM) is a university in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, founded in 1989. It has about 400 full-time and part-time students, and more than 500 alumni. Its president is Dr. Francio Guadeloupe. USM was established in 1989 by the Honorable Dr. Albert Claudius Wathey and the Honorable Ambassador Dr. Hushang Ansary as an annex of Johnson and Wales University. Its facilities were destroyed by Hurricane Lenny in 1999, but the university was rebuilt. Its peach and white building overlooks the Great Salt Pond in picturesque Philipsburg.

SCELL: USM'S BUSINESS ARM & VEHICLE OF EXCELLENCE.

USM Board President, Valerie Giterson-Pantophlet, called the SCELL program the new vehicle to move the university forward. “The dealership is embodied in our fresh and talented President Dr. Francio Guadeloupe. Next to him is the brand new vehicle in the person of Dr. Natasha Gittens who is committed to the success of this program. This is what we need to move St. Maarten forward. These programs will enhance the knowledge of our population. The program is the vehicle we need to change the community we have. USM started last year with a pilot program with WIB and this program was a success,” said the USM Board President.
USM MILESTONES: BTEC, AHLEI & UVI
In August 2015, The University of St. Martin (USM) achieved a major milestone with theaccreditation of its Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) program by Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) in the United Kingdom. BTEC-accredited degrees are recognized in the US and in Europe. This is the fi rst program under the USM umbrella to be accredited.
In September 2015, USM is acknowledged by AHLEI as the third institution in the Caribbean to offer courses from American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI). AHLEI is a professional institute that offers education for hospitality industry workers. AHLEI operates out of Sandals Resort in Jamaica and at Epic in Aruba. St. Maarten will serve as the institute for the North Eastern Caribbean, where personnel from American hotels can come to upgrade their skills.
On April 22, 2015, the University of St. Martin (USM) and the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) signed what was described as a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will allow students from St. Maarten/St. Martin and from other parts of the Caribbean region to obtain American accredited degrees at USM in St. Maarten. The cooperation commenced in August 2015, with a Masters of Arts cohort in the education field and the possibilities of Bachelors of Arts cohort in business and hospitality. The UVI programs in USM’s campus is in tandem with the demand for such programs and will be of the same standard and quality of those programs offered on all of UVI’s existing campuses or through online options.
